Bio

Assistant conductor of the Young Orchestra of Extremadura (2018-2020), and principal conductor of the "Rovira i Virgili" University Symphonic Orchestra (Tarragona), Miquel Massana has also recently been appointed assistant conductor of the Association of Concerts in Reus for 2019-2021 period.   

During this last season Massana has been invited to conduct the Vallès Symphony Orchestra and the Chamber Orchestra of the island of Menorca and, among other orchestras, he has conducted the Boston Youth Philarmonic Orchestra, the Diagonal Ensemble or the Terrassa 48 orchestra. Moreover, since the 2017-2018 season he is the artistic director of the cobla "La Principal de Tarragona". 


He began to study piano in his hometown and cotinued at the Conservatory of Reus with Víctor Santapau. Later he moved at the Conservatori del Liceu (Barcelona) where he studied piano with Stanislav Pochekin and Daniel Ligorio and chamber music with Guerassim Voronkov. During this period the Duo Venti and the Muczinsky Trio were born, chamber groups with which he has been recognized in competitions such as the 1sr prize in the 17th Arjau competition or finalist and prize of the public in the 8th Internacional Competition of Les Corts. 

Interested really soon in conducting, in 2013 he started this studies in the Superior School of Music of Catalonia with Salvador Brotons. At the same time he was admitted at the Univeristät für Musik und Darstellende Kunst in Vienna, where he could expand his knowledge with Johannes Wildner and Ingrun Fussenegger. On the other hand he has given courses and has recieved advices from conductors such as Pablo González - whom he has accompanied on several occasions during the last season - Benjamin Zander, Xavier Puig, Antoni Ros-Marbà and Mark Leitner.

In the teaching field he has been the head of the musical language department at the Conservatory of Bellaterra between 2013 and 2018 where he has taught Harmony, Musical Analysis, Piano and Chamber Music. Currently he is working at the Conservatory of Tarragona as a vocal coach.
